I am a freelance writer, radio journalist, video reporter, translator, editor, and proofreader, based in Southeast Asia and Australia.
I specialise in environmental issues and my main focus is my site, Changing Times. I also work for the GRNLive news agency in London, various radio stations, and other sites, including the Environment News Service.
Educational qualifications: Eight O-levels and four A-levels (including French).
Professional training: National journalism training course, Sheffield, England.
Work experience:
1976-1978: Reporter, Peterborough Evening egraph.
1979: Sub-editor, Oxford Times.
Selected for the Paris-based ‘Journalists in Europe’ fellowship. Working trips made to Belgium, Spain, Swedish Lapland, the then Soviet Union, Hungary, Egypt, and Turkey.
1980: Freelance writer and sub-editor. Contributed to The Guardian, The Observer, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Irish Times, the Irish Press group, the Irish Independent, The Scotsman, the New Statesman, New Society, the New Internationalist, and specialist publications in the fields of medicine, education, and architecture.
1980-1987: London correspondent for The Irish Times, assisting and standing in for successive London editors. Sub-editor at The Times, The Sunday Times, The Observer, and The Guardian.
Five-month trip to India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal on reporting assignments.
1987-1988: Staff sub-editor at The Guardian.
1989- 1990: Working trips to Romania (at the time of the revolution), the United States, and the Philippines, producing news stories and features for the Irish Press group, The Irish Times, The Scotsman, and others.
1990-1992: Freelance London correspondent for the Irish Press group and Century Radio, Dublin. Covered major Appeal Court hearings.
1992-1993: Editor on the English desk at Agence France-Presse (AFP) in Paris, translating and rewriting copy for output on the wires.
1993-1994: Editor on the European desk of the Inter Press Service (IPS) news agency in Amsterdam. Working trips to Jamaica, New York, and Ireland. Returned to France to work at AFP.
1994-1995: Full-time at Radio France International’s English-language service, producing and presenting news programmes for Europe, Asia, and Africa, and a regular feature programme on the environment in Africa.
1995-1998: Returned to freelancing. Produced and presented news analysis programmes at Radio Netherlands.
Worked as a translator, copywriter, and editor for CFG Consultants in Paris, producing annual reports in English for a wide range of companies such as Sodexo, Gemplus, and Gaz de France. Sub-editor at The Irish Times (summer 1998).
1999-present day:
I have freelanced for numerous companies, including Radio France International, euronews evision, Agence France-Presse, Free Speech Radio News in the United States, Off the Record Research in the US, the CrossKnowledge e-learning company in Paris, the International Cocoa Initiative, RTE radio in Ireland, BBC Radio Belfast and Radio Foyle, and the CBC News Network in Canada.
