Host overview

Update- Spring has sprung early this year and we’re getting ready to start planting! We’re offering hands on experience with alternative construction methods, organic gardening in addition to a variety of other projects throughout the coming year! We’re also seeking a house sitter or two starting April 14.

Moss Hill Farm grows organic vegetables, fruit and timber for local markets. We currently use 5 acres for organic gardening and leave the vast majority(300 acres) forested while we let goats, chickens and pigs help control vegetation and insects. Our passion is to use permacultural methods which we can share with others in order that they may learn the skills to build healthy soil and implement sustainable farming practices – to help solve the farming crisis currently afflicting much of the world. We’re always open to creative ideas and the “why don’t we” input. This farm is a group effort and we love learning from folks that join us.

In addition to daily garden and animal tending, we have a few larger projects to tackle including-

-build new, off grid guest accommodations(Tiny House)

-repair of an irrigation dam under the guidance of a master stone mason/maintain gravity-fed sprinkler system

-design and install a “Micro-Hydro” Electricity generation system on a large brook

-build recreational Mt. bike trail for public use

-Timber Stand Improvement(Opportunity for helping manage forest health)

-collect logs/ inoculate with Shiitake mushroom spawn

    What we provide

    How we work

In the evenings we sometimes like to swim at Black Brook, or maybe read one of a of books about sustainability from our small library. The property abuts Blandford State Forest which we sometimes visit to identify and harvest wild edibles. Russell has a good restaurant/bar and a few general stores within a miles drive.

We’re a half-mile walk from the center of town, a 15 minute drive from the nearest grocery store in Westfield which we make at least once a day. You’re welcome to bring your own vehicle but could easily get by just fine riding one of the bikes or carpooling with one of us. Northampton is a college town 30 minutes drive to the north and has an awesome live music scene. You’re welcome to bring your own camper, use our guest bedroom, or one of the tent and platforms. Wireless internet is available.
Initially we have a two or three day trial period to make sure it’s a good fit for all.

Please be courteous and polite. We’ve welcomed visitors for years and we’re very easy going and we’d love to meet you!
